Made in Jaipur, printed with wooden blocks
Our cotton bandanas start as a pattern carved into a wooden block. A printer dips the block in dye, presses it onto the cloth, lifts it and moves to the next spot. The spacing shifts a little from piece to piece, which is how you can tell the print was done by hand and not by a machine.
The natural colors soften with every wash, and the cloth is light and breathable, so a bandana stays comfortable when the weather turns hot. CraftJaipur is based in Chandpole Bazar, Jaipur, and every order ships from there.
Which pack should you buy?
A single cotton bandana goes with almost anything, but a set gives you a few prints to rotate. This is how most people choose:
| You want to | Pick |
|---|---|
| Try one print or give a small gift | A set of 2 |
| Wear a different print each day of the week | A pack of 5 to 8 |
| Hand them out at a wedding, party or retreat | A pack of 15 to 25 |
| Stock a shop or order custom sizes | Message us for a trade quote |

Size and fit
A standard adult bandana measures 22 x 22 inches (56 x 56 cm). Ours are about 21 x 21 inches (53 x 53 cm), close enough that every fold below works the same way. The square covers your hair with room to spare, and cotton grips better than silk or satin, so a knot tends to stay where you put it.
How to tie a bandana
Learning how to tie a bandana takes about a minute. Bandanas for women and men use the same first move: fold the square corner to corner into a triangle, then pick a style.
Headband
For a bandana headband wrap:
- Keep folding the long edge of your triangle toward the point, in even folds, until you have a flat band about 2 to 3 inches wide.
- Lay the band across your hairline with the ends running behind your ears.
- Tip your head forward so your hair is clear of your neck.
- Tie a double knot at the nape.
Full head cover
For a head scarf bandana that covers your hair:
- Set the long edge of the triangle along your forehead, with the point resting at the back of your head.
- Tie the two ends once at the nape.
- Tuck the point under the knot, then tie again to lock it in.
Neck
For a cotton scarf bandana worn at your neck:
- Wrap the long edge of the triangle around the back of your neck, with the point hanging in front.
- Tie a knot at the back.
- Leave an inch or two of slack so it sits loose and doesn't pinch.
For women, for men, for everyone
Cotton bandanas for women often start as a hair tool: a hair wrap over a ponytail or bun, a headband on a day the hair won't cooperate, or a knot on a handbag strap.
A cotton bandana for men usually ends up at the neck or under a cap. It keeps the sun off during a ride or a hike, and folded into a band it keeps sweat out of your eyes. Everything here is unisex, so choose the print and ignore the label.
Packing, festivals and everything in between
Rolled up, a bandana takes less space than a pair of socks. On a cool evening it doubles as a bandana scarf cotton drape over your shoulders. At a festival it covers your head and neck from the sun, and folded small it does the job of a neckerchief under a collar.
Washing and care
Wash cold with similar colors for the first few washes, because natural dyes can release a little color at the start. Dry in the shade and iron on medium while the cloth is still slightly damp.

Frequently asked questions
What size is a bandana?
The standard adult size is 22 by 22 inches (56 by 56 cm). Ours measure about 21 by 21 inches. Kids' bandanas run smaller, usually 14 to 18 inches.
How do you tie a bandana as a headband?
Fold it into a triangle, keep folding the long edge until you have a flat band, and lay it across your hairline. Tie a double knot at the nape. Tipping your head forward keeps hair out of the knot.
Is cotton a good choice for hot weather?
Yes. Cotton lets air through and absorbs sweat, so it feels lighter on the skin than silk or synthetic fabric. If you wear one for workouts, rinse it after each use.
Can men and women both wear these?
Yes. The squares are the same for everyone, and the prints are not tied to a gender. Pick the colors and patterns you like.
How do I wash a block print bandana?
Wash it cold with similar colors for the first few washes, since natural dyes can release some color at the start. Dry it in the shade and iron on medium while slightly damp.
What is the difference between a bandana and a scarf?
A bandana is a small square, usually 22 inches, meant to be folded and tied. A scarf is longer or larger and is often made of silk or wool. Oversized squares blur the line, so go by size and how you plan to wear it.
Can I order large quantities or custom sizes?
Yes. Sets go up to 25 pieces, and custom sizes are available on request. Shops and event buyers can email craftjaipur333@gmail.com or call (+91) 9982391056.
Where does the word bandana come from?
It comes from the Hindi word bandhnu, which refers to tie-dyeing, and traces back to a Sanskrit root meaning "to tie". Bandanas began in India as bright cloths of silk and cotton.
