What is Bagru print?
Bagru print is a block printing tradition from the town of Bagru in Rajasthan. A printer carves a pattern into a wooden block, dips it in dye and presses it onto cotton, one repeat at a time. Bagru prints are known for earthy colors, deep indigo and bold, simple motifs from plants, flowers and trees.
Because every stamp is pressed by hand, spacing and shade shift a little along the cloth. That is the mark of the process, not a flaw. Colors can also look a touch different from the photos on your screen.
Tree of life: the pattern at the center of this collection
The tree of life is one of the best-known motifs in this style: a branching tree, often with birds and flowers, repeated across the cloth. In indigo on a natural cotton base, it reads as classic and works in both modern and traditional rooms. It is a good first piece if you are new to block print fabric.
Indigo block print fabric
Our indigo block print fabric has a deep blue that sits well next to white, natural linen and denim. Indigo is forgiving: it suits a summer dress as easily as a curtain, and it hides small marks better than a pale print does.
Cotton for sewing
Everything here is cotton, soft and breathable. Bagru block print cotton fabric is easy to cut and sew, it holds a crease, and it presses well. Use it for:
- Dresses and tops: loose, gathered or A-line shapes, where the print shows best.
- Home projects: cushion covers, table runners, curtains and napkins.
- Gifts and crafts: tote bags, pouches, patchwork and Christmas projects. The tree print in this collection suits holiday sewing.
How much fabric to buy
Check the yardage on your pattern envelope first. It depends on the pattern, your size and the fabric width. Then add about 10% on top, because cotton shrinks a little in the first wash, and a block print needs extra when you match the pattern across a seam.
Prewash before you cut
Wash a small cut of the fabric on its own in cold water before you cut the whole length. Block prints, and indigo above all, can release some color in the first washes, so wash it apart from light colors and dry it in the shade. This also shows you how much it shrinks.

Frequently asked questions
What is Bagru print fabric?
It is cotton block printed by hand in the style of Bagru, a town in Rajasthan. A carved wooden block is dipped in dye and pressed onto the cloth, and the pattern repeats along the length.
What does the tree of life pattern mean?
It is a traditional motif of a branching tree, often with birds and flowers. It stands for growth and connection, and it is popular on bedding, cushions and dresses.
Is Bagru print the same as block print?
Bagru is one style of block print. Block printing is the method, and Bagru is a place with its own look: earthy colors, indigo and simple, bold motifs.
What can I sew with Bagru block print fabric?
Dresses, tops, skirts, cushion covers, table runners, curtains and tote bags. It is soft cotton, so it is easy to cut and sew.
Will the indigo color run in the wash?
It can in the first few washes. Wash it alone in cold water, dry it in the shade, and wash a small cut before you cut the whole piece.
How much fabric do I need for a dress?
It depends on the pattern, the size and the fabric width. Use the yardage on your pattern envelope and add about 10% for shrinkage and print matching.
Will the fabric look exactly like the photo?
Close, but not identical. Each piece is printed by hand, so spacing and shade vary slightly, and screens can show colors a little differently.
Can I order a large quantity?
Yes. Shops and workshops can email craftjaipur333@gmail.com or call (+91) 9982391056 with the print and the quantity.
